Good Trouble is No Trouble For Me

There’s bingeing, and then there’s bingeing. Usually I’m the former, but when watching Freeform’s Good Trouble, I’m definitely the latter.

Setting the scene: I discovered Good Trouble accidentally 一 rather, the Hulu algorithm perfectly predicted what I’d like based on what I’d previously watched.

*eyeroll*

We are introduced to Mariana and Callie Adams Foster, adopted sisters trucking along in a U-HAUL toward their new, gainful careers in Los Angeles. Actually, we are reintroduced to the sisters, as Good Trouble (GT) is a spin-off from the popular ABC Family series The Fosters. True to CP form, I ended up bingeing GT before beginning The Fosters and STILL enjoyed it as its own separate thing.

Software Engineer Mariana and straight-outta-Law-School Callie have many traits that I admire, and some that I cringe at because they know better. They end up living in a commune that consists of lofts on the top floor of a renowned local theater. Aesthetically, the commune alone looks like the inside of a style-fluid Anthropologie store. I was immediately inspired because location is everything. However, a big no-no for me was the communal bathroom and showers.

*gags in the key of college memories

Aside from the set 一 which, please, find your nearest Anthropologie ASAPtually 一 the diverse cast and subsequent character development is hands-down one of the best I’ve seen on television. As a Millennial who can only handle the first 15% of Gen Z, I appreciate the meshing of both gens as exhibited in the storyline, replete with situations that prove antagonistic (rather than making a specific character the villain), as well as the reward to the protagonists (Mariana, Callie, and six or seven loft mates (?)) when they overcome any self-inflicted or third-person-inflicted obstacles. Love that for them. Truly.

Mental Health. The stigma of Women in Tech. Equal Pay. Black Lives. Latinx Lives. LGBTQIA+. Polyamory. Liberal v. Conservative. Morality, ethics. Grief process. Responsibility. Speaking up for one’s self. Standing up for what one believes in. Adoption and blended families. School to Prison pipeline. Religion/Spirituality.

I mean, this show has more inclusivity options than the ones you select in your Bumble dating profile or when you join a Reddit Community. It’s insane! I’ve learned so much and have been exposed to certifiably more than I would in my real life.

Ultimately, I’m not here to give you a plot-by-plot thesis on Good Trouble. I just like the way that the show is written and it inspired me to make changes in my own life that previously my comfort zone booted like a bouncer at 21+ Up clubs.
